Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to contest certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
