Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
